Subject: certificato di stato -HELP
Message: Last October I sent to Termini (Archivo di Stato) for a certificato di stato di famiglia for my grandfather. I gave them his date of birth (1872) and the names of his parents because that's all the information I have. Today I finallly received a reply. However, I'm not sure what it says:

"In riscontro alla Sua nota del 2.10.99 si comunica che questo Archivio di Stato conserva gli atti dello stato civile della sola provincia di Palermo del periodo 1820-1865, pertanto per ottenere le copie che la interessano dovrà rivolgersi direttamente all' Ufficio Anagrafe del Comune di nascita.

Si precisa, ad ogni modo che non è possible evadere richieste di atti di stato civile in mancanza della indicazione della località di nascita o della data di nascita."

Can someone translate this? The letter was from the Archivio di Stato di Palermo even though I wrote to Termini. Are they saying that Palermo only has records up to 1865 and that I should write to the Anagrafe of Termini, wherever that is?

Has anyone else ever received this document? (certificato di stato)

Message: There is no Archivio di Stato in Termini - the Archivio di Stato is in Palermo, and it covers the entire province. Each province in Italy has ONE Archivio di Stato.

The individual Italian towns have Anagrafe offices that keep the civil records [including Stato di Famiglias] of the town. You may have thought you mailed the letter to Termini, but it went to the Archivio di Stato in Palermo - and they are telling you that you have to write to the town where the person was born, attention the Anagrafe office. The town is the only place to get a Stato Di Famiglia. Use this address:

Bear in mind that this document was not widespread in Italy until the early 1900's and some places may not be able to send you one.
